Description
RE already takes us beyond the human realm, exploring ideas about the divine, the afterlife, and even the nature of reality itself, to name but a few ‘beyond human’ explorations that are part and parcel of our wonderful subject. This edition invites readers to dig deeper still and explore some challenging questions. Is the RE too focused on human experience alone? Are we missing opportunities to help students reflect on the interconnectedness of all life—human, animal, and beyond? This issue is rich with ideas that encourage reflection on the divine, super-human, non-human realms, and even AI—an ever-present part of our lives and our futures.
On our cover, we feature Dr. Jane Goodall, whose work offers profound spiritual, moral and scientific insights into the world beyond humanity, and challenges us to re-think worldviews centred around human interests. Such ideas resonate deeply in the classroom, particularly as young people show increasing concern for the environment and its future, which goes hand in hand with care for our fellow earthlings, be they human or not. Also, within this edition, you’ll find a student’s perspective on AI, prompting us to consider the ethical dimensions of artificial intelligence. These questions are no longer hypothetical, and we bring you articles which engage with the practical potential of AI for teachers, along with reflections on its moral and spiritual implications, equipping teachers to help students thoughtfully consider these urgent themes for themselves. For primary educators, we also have practical guidance on teaching infant RE and sparking curiosity in the youngest learners with compassion and care. Last, but not least, we’re delighted to share news of the new resources from RE Today, some of which accompany this magazine. These exciting and innovative materials will help support foster learners’ understandings of Muslim beliefs and ways of living, introducing authentic voices from contemporary Muslims.
This edition offers fresh perspectives to enable thought-provoking, engaging and challenging RE, exploring the world beyond human, with its glorious mysteries and moral conundrums.
