Description
This edition delves into the profound theme of light and illumination, exploring its symbolism in religion and belief, and its power to guide us through darkness. We invite you to consider ways in which RE can be a source of light, bringing clarity to children and young people. We challenge you to think deeply about how we can shine a light onto RE, elucidating understanding and appreciation of our wonderful subject beyond our professional community. In many religious and philosophical traditions, light symbolises hope, enlightenment and divine presence. From the glow of Diwali’s diva lamps to twinkling Christmas lights, from the candles of Hanukkah to the purifying flames in Buddhist ceremonies, light represents the triumph of knowledge over ignorance, good over evil, and hope over despair.
An RE teacher can be like a lighthouse keeper, entrusted with illuminating the way for our learners, helping them navigate a complex, multi-religious and multi-secular world. How can we ensure our classrooms are beacons of understanding and respect in an increasingly dynamic yet increasingly divided and polarised world?
In the articles that follow, you will find ideas for incorporating the symbolism of light into your RE lessons, from a ‘Diwali disco’ to luminous calligraphy. Our teacher authors share creative lesson ideas that celebrate religious festivals of light, brimming with activities to encourage children and young people to reflect on their own sources of inspiration and guidance.
Our new ‘Ask an adviser’ page aims to shed light on real-life questions and conundrums faced by NATRE members. Send us your questions to feature in our next issue!
As we embark on a new academic year, we hope these articles brighten the darker autumn and winter days, and inspire you to embrace the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
