Description
Understanding Muslims, Understanding Islam features a religion and worldviews approach, balancing an exploration of the traditions and teachings of Islam with the lived experience of Muslims.
This complete volume explores the lives of Muslims and the world of Islam. It is part of a three-volume series that provides units of work and associated resources for teachers, including:
- unit outlines
- lesson plans with clear instructions for teaching and learning
- knowledge building blocks
- clear use of disciplinary methods or ‘ways of knowing’
- subject knowledge for teachers
- extensive classroom resource materials, featuring the voices of contemporary Muslims.
Units include:
Unit 1, for 5-7s, explores what it means to be brought up in Muslim homes in Britain. Pupils encounter several Muslim homes and families via photographs and interviews, exploring ways in which being Muslim can influence homes and ways of living. A focus on the aqiqah ceremony illustrates some of the varieties of practice and experience.
Unit 2, for 7-9s, investigates the place and influence of Prophet Muhammad in Muslim traditions and in Muslim lives. Using sources from the Qur’an, Hadith and biographies of Muhammad, pupils learn about the life of the Prophet, and hear from Muslims about what impact he has in their thinking and living.
Unit 3, for 9-11s, focuses on Hajj as a case study. It supports pupils and teachers in reflecting on the impact of Hajj in the lives of Muslims, using sources from Islamic tradition and the voices of contemporary Muslims.
