Description
This volume explores the lives of Muslims and the world of Islam. It is part of a three-volume series that provides units of work and associated resources for teachers:
- unit outlines
- knowledge building blocks
- background knowledge for teachers
- lesson plans with clear instructions for teaching and learning
- extensive classroom resource materials, featuring the voices of contemporary Muslims.
The resources feature a religion and worldviews approach, balancing an exploration of the traditions and teachings of Islam with the lived experience of Muslims.
Unit 1 for 11-14s gives a wealth of source material for the study of the lives and worldviews of young British Muslims. Students apply methods from religious studies and sociology to examine quantitative data on young Muslims in Britain, on their complex identities, on prayer and worship, and on beliefs, relationships and moral issues. They study qualitative data (interviews) on the influences in Muslim lives, the challenges and joys of being Muslim in Britain, generational differences between young people and their parents and grandparents, and questions of popular culture.
Unit 2 for 12-14s explores how the arts have been used to express ideas in Islamic traditions.
Students draw on historical, theological and philosophical/aesthetic sources and methods as they examine Muslims’ use of geometric art, calligraphy, poetry and garden design across the ages.
They are given some keys to understanding and interpreting the images and texts, so that they can ‘read’ Islamic arts as they encounter them. Students are encouraged to engage with some of the debates that have continued through the ages, reflecting on scholarly responses, such as those regarding the extent to which geometric art does express theological content, and the use of imagery of wine in the Qur’an and Muslim poetry.
