Description
| This volume explores the lives of Muslims and the world of Islam. It is part of a three-volume series that provides units of work and associated resources for teachers:
· unit outlines · knowledge building blocks · background knowledge for teachers · lesson plans with clear instructions for teaching and learning · extensive classroom resource materials, featuring the voices of contemporary Muslims.
The resources feature a religion and worldviews approach, balancing an exploration of the traditions and teachings of Islam with the lived experience of Muslims.
Unit 1 for 13-14s (and older) explores the experience of women in Islam through the ages. Drawing on source material from the Qur’an, Hadith, Islamic scholars from eighth century to today, current academic research and the voices of contemporary Muslims, it moves from exploring texts about the women and men in the Qur’an to case studies about women in the Qur’an and the early Muslim community, and examples of Muslim women in different contexts in history. Students explore accounts of the changes that Islam brought to the place of women compared with pre-Islamic times. They have an opportunity to investigate some of the ways in which a key Qur’anic text has been interpreted through the ages and its impact in Muslim lives today. Interviews and comments from Muslim women in the UK and beyond help students to address the unit question. Unit 2 for 12-14s explores teachings on akhirah – the afterlife – in relation to the nature of God in Islam. Students study sources and traditions on life and death, judgment, heaven and hell and the afterlife, and her from Muslims about the impact of these on their everyday lives. Students use a variety of disciplinary ways of knowing, including theological approaches to textual analysis, such as asking questions about historical context; methods from social sciences to analyse interview and quantitative data; and philosophical tools to clarify meanings and construct arguments.
