Description
Religious celebrations, high days and holidays matter deeply to many people in this country and around the world. Religious and secular festivals are huge cultural events and family occasions which express shared beliefs, values, hopes, commitments and a sense of identity. This book has been written to provide the RE subject leader and class teacher with ideas and planning for good-quality RE that will support a progression of teaching of celebration across the whole school.
For our youngest children we explore what happens at Eid-ul-Adah through the use of journey sticks and stories. The value of freedom within the festival of Pesach is investigated with one of our ever-popular ‘big pictures’. For older pupils the celebration of Pentecost, immensely significant in Christian belief and practice, is studied through the story of the ‘birthday of the Church’, and the significance of the giving of the Holy Spirit. Finally for our oldest pupils we explore what makes a festival and modern celebrations such as Comic Relief. For subject leaders and teachers we also have festival mini guides and ideas for teaching an RE day on a specific celebration.
