Description
RE Ideas: Journey has been written to provide RE subject leaders and teachers with ideas and planning for good quality RE. Pilgrimage can be found in the practice of many religions; to places significant in the history of the religion, to sites of spiritual significance, to carry out particular practices and to sites to pray and ‘be close to God’. Pilgrimage is not the sole preserve of those with religious beliefs; football fans, music fans and others can make their own non-religious pilgrimages to visit places significant to their chosen ‘community’ or group.
RE Ideas Journey explores spiritual journey, looking at the differences between a holiday and a pilgrimage using an example from Christianity and Hinduism. The Jewish festival of Pesach or Passover is explored using a learning challenge, drama and a trail to find and understand the elements of a modern Pesach celebration. For older pupils we look at a Hindu pilgrimage to Varanasi and the Muslim pilgrimage or Hajj to Mecca. Many people view life as a journey and we look at how the life of three people; Paul, John Newton and Malcom X changed because of their beliefs.
